Reviving the whimsical weirdness of the silly 70s for the world's most beloved department store. We used modern techniques to emulate vintage technology and create music and sound that captures the era's whacky essence.
When Selfridges opened its doors for the start of ‘23, its stores were transformed into a colourful playground of Angela Kirkwood's kooky, joyful cardboard characters & animated displays to celebrate five special occasions throughout the year: Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, Valentine’s, Easter and Halloween.
Skillbard were chosen to soundtrack each occasion with some tape-saturated, 70s-style sound & music for our love of all things kerayzee, and maybe for our attention to detail in achieving an authentic retro sound.
To get a feel for the essence of the whacky, psychedelic cartoons Angela evokes, we undertook a rigorous investigation, establishing research methodologies and advanced sonic analysis techniques. That is to say, mostly, we watched a load of cartoons at work.
We enjoyed a few old episodes of shows like Pink Panther, Blue Racer, and Time for Timer, listening out for the unique qualities that made them iconic, complete with nostalgic analogue tape hiss and crackle.
“It has been so easy and lovely working with you. You nailed it every time!!!”
