Louder, Faster, Harder

Ey3k0N, a comic universe spearheaded by legendary Marvel artists like Ron Frenz, Adam Pollina, and Tom DeFalco, explores a near-future where online reigns supreme and ten hyper-influencers hold ultimate power. Our friends at Truba wanted the audio to be EXTREME and they knew they could count on Skillbard to bring the ruckus.

When we first sat down with director Greg Sharp and Rebel Studios, they were unsure which way they wanted to skin this particular cybercat. They had two main directions in mind: “Mysterious” and “Techno”. Guess which we eventually went with…

Before landing on the industrial onslaught of the final soundtrack, we experimented with a few approaches.

Schoenbergian Runs

Here we built tension through fast-paced, dissonant string arpeggios.

Dystopian Baroque

In this concept, we juxtaposed the brutal visuals with a heavy, plodding baroque chord progression, channeling the grandeur of Purcel's "Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary," but with a dystopian twist.

Movie Fantasia

We explored a more cinematic approach with some modern film score mainstays – a  driving staccato bassline, punctuated by syncopated percussion, which lends a futuristic air.

The Plug-in

With this, eventually chosen, direction, we explored a shift in focus. Initially, we follow the protagonist's perspective, feeling the intoxicating excitement of plugging into the Ey3k0N universe. Later, the mood darkens, foreshadowing the violence and rampant narcissism therein.
