Embracing Chance

Working on music-to-picture or creating to briefs of any kind can be great for creativity. It can offer challenges you would usually not have to deal with and push you into directions you might never naturally take. But the guidelines and requirements inherent to a brief of course impose limitations. The opportunity to open up creatively, play freely, explore, and let the piece take you on a journey is rare.

With this project, we took a risk and embraced that uncertainty.

We’ve worked with director Alex Grigg many times. We know & love him and we’re familiar his process and creative goals. Knowing this, Alex left the brief open, the only request being to create something inspired by our previous collaboration "Born in a Void."

As is evident in his work, Alex is very texture-orientated. He loves intimate, tactile sounds. With this in mind, we put all planning and thinking aside and started with listening. Opening our sample browser, we began clicking through the vast array of options, completely at random. We basically just listened out for anything that sounded, well… good. Whenever we stumbled upon something suitably intimate and tactile, we dropped it into our project.

From there, we gently molded and shaped the samples we’d collected, roughly aligning textural crescendos with flourishes in the animation. Working quickly and instinctively, we allowed the music to take form organically.

After some fine-tuning and adjustments, the piece was complete.
